Fiji’s Under-18 rugby players are preparing for exciting international competition with two Test matches scheduled against the Australia and New Zealand Schoolboys following this year’s Vodafone Deans Championship. This significant opportunity was confirmed by Savenaca Muamua, vice-president of the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union, who explained that the matches are set for September.

These fixtures are crucial for the development of Fiji’s secondary school rugby scene, providing young athletes with vital international exposure. Muamua emphasized that this experience aims to not only evaluate the skills and depth of local talent but also to serve as an essential pathway for players aspiring to reach professional levels in the sport. “All Under-18 players are looking forward to joining their team for the Australia tour,” he said.

The squad will be chosen based on standout performances during the Deans competition, a prestigious event known for producing talented players who often become part of the Flying Fijians team. The impending international matches are expected to elevate competition levels and foster pride and ambition within the local rugby community, showcasing the next generation of Fiji’s rugby talents. The first match against Australia is slated for September 4 in Brisbane.

This upcoming series aligns with the ongoing emphasis on youth development in Fijian rugby, recalling the recent remarks made by head coach Mick Byrne regarding the promising talent emerging from the Deans tournament. Byrne highlighted that nurturing young athletes is crucial for the future of Fijian rugby, reinforcing hopes for their impactful contributions on an international scale.

With dedicated training and preparation, these young athletes are poised to make a significant mark in their upcoming matches, brightening the future of rugby in Fiji.
