Fiery Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is one of eight players representing Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This news was shared by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.

Rabele disclosed, “We traveled to Australia to scout, and we have selected eight players.” He highlighted Lutu’s significant contribution as a standout halfback for the Wests Tigers.

Born in Suva, Lutu, who progressed through the Campbelltown junior ranks, has quickly risen through the Wests Tigers pathways. Known for her dynamic running game, she had a breakout season in 2022, where she aided New South Wales in clinching victory in the Under-19s State of Origin and achieved her first title with the Wests Tigers in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. She is contracted with the club until the end of the 2026 season.

The coach emphasized that they will select the best combination of players for their match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26, a crucial qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League Women’s World Cup. Rabele, who previously led the Bati to the semi-finals in the 2008 World Cup, noted, “We have been monitoring the women’s games in the local competition.”

Currently, he has several players in mind for the 35-member squad, but he will need NRL’s approval for their eligibility. He also pointed out that there is considerable room for improvement, particularly regarding the local competition’s level.

“The qualifier is a very important game for us,” Rabele stated, acknowledging the path ahead to qualify for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. He is optimistic about the team’s strength while awaiting confirmation from the NRL and plans to include several secondary school players from Lami Steelers in the qualifier.

Rabele mentioned that 50 percent of the squad would comprise local-based athletes. Reflecting on previous setbacks, he noted that last year’s absence of Fiji Bulikula in the World Cup was a disappointment. “This year presents us with a great opportunity to identify our players. We will form a competitive team consisting of a blend of talent,” he concluded.
