Ponipate Loganimasi made a bold choice to pursue rugby instead of attending university, a decision that his father, Joeli Kalougata, fully supported. Just under two years into his journey with the national sevens team, Loganimasi has already made an impressive mark on the international rugby scene.
This year, he was part of the men’s rugby sevens team that secured an Olympic silver medal, and he also earned recognition as the only Fijian player to be named on the World Rugby Men’s Sevens Dream Team of the Year. This prestigious honor was announced recently. Loganimasi’s remarkable year continued as he made his debut for the Flying Fijians during the World Rugby’s Pacific Nations Cup in September, where he scored two tries in their 41-17 victory against Japan, helping Fiji retain the PNC title.
In October, he furthered his career by signing with the Fijian Drua. Originally from Lovoni in Ono-i-Lau and raised in Nabua, Koroalau, Cakaudrove, the 26-year-old athlete attributes his success to the guidance of his family. Despite being encouraged to pursue studies at Brigham Young University in Utah by his family, Loganimasi chose the path of rugby. His father expressed immense pride in his son’s achievements, emphasizing the importance of faith, hard work, and humility. Kalougata stated, “If rugby will put food on the table for you – I’ll support your decision.”
Loganimasi is not only a talented rugby player but also a Coca-Cola Games gold medalist, having excelled in the 200m event during his junior year at Navatu Secondary School. His athletic prowess extends to both rugby and indoor basketball during his high school years.
Loganimasi’s remarkable journey serves as an inspiring testament to following one’s passion. As he continues to break barriers and achieve great success in rugby, he is proving that with dedication and the right mindset, dreams can indeed become reality.
In a time when young athletes face difficult choices between academics and pursuing sports, Loganimasi’s story stands as a beacon of hope, encouraging others to find their own paths and pursue their passions.
