Fiji rugby sevens player Ponipate Loganimasi is poised to make his Test debut for the Flying Fijians in the Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan, taking place at the Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Osaka.
Head coach Mick Byrne announced last night that Ilaisa Droasese would replace Epeli Momo on the wing, which opens up a place for Loganimasi on the bench. Byrne expressed optimism about Loganimasi’s training performance, indicating enthusiasm for the Olympic silver medalist to potentially make his debut.
Byrne noted a strong competition among the players vying for positions in the Match 23 squad. Also returning to the squad are rookie lock Mesake Vocevoce and prop Meli Tuni. Vocevoce had missed the semi-final win over the USA due to the passing of his father, while Tuni steps in for the injured Peni Ravai.
Byrne commented on the team’s preparation, highlighting the hot and humid weather conditions, yet emphasizing the team’s organization and focus. He remarked that training has been intense, reserving energy levels for the final.
Some players have been nursing injuries, including Peni Ravai and Selestino Ravutaumada, but overall, Byrne noted that the team has been resilient. Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula has been impressive at fullback as the team turns its attention to Saturday’s final against Japan, which is set to kick off at 10:05 PM.
