Fiji rugby sevens player Ponipate Loganimasi is set to potentially make his Test debut for the Flying Fijians in the Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan at Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Osaka. Coach Mick Byrne announced Ilaisa Droasese would be taking Epeli Momo’s place on the wing, creating an opportunity for Loganimasi to join the team as a substitute.
Byrne expressed confidence in Loganimasi’s training, noting his impressive performance and the hope to provide the Olympic silver medalist with his first Test match experience. There is a strong sense of competition among the players for inclusion in the Match 23 squad, with rookie lock Mesake Vocevoce and prop Meli Tuni rejoining the lineup. Vocevoce was absent during the semi-final victory over the USA due to the passing of his father, while Tuni steps in for the injured Peni Ravai.
Byrne highlighted the team’s solid preparation amid hot and humid conditions and praised their organization and training efforts. Though some players have been struggling with minor injuries, such as Ravai and Selestino Ravutaumada, the team is maintaining good morale. Byrne mentioned that Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula has excelled at fullback, emphasizing that their focus remains solely on the upcoming match against Japan, which kicks off at 10:05 PM.
