Fiji’s rugby captain Waisea Nayacalevu has officially joined the Ospreys from Sale Sharks for the remainder of the season, stepping in to fill the void left by the injured Owen Watkin. The experienced 34-year-old joined Sale at the beginning of the 2024-25 season as a replacement for Manu Tuilagi and has played in seven matches thus far.
Nayacalevu boasts an impressive career, with ten successful years at Stade Francais where he scored 82 tries in 200 matches, before moving to Toulon. His time at Toulon saw him return to the international scene, where he captained Fiji to a memorable victory against England at Twickenham in preparation for the 2023 World Cup. He also led the team to an outstanding win over Wales in Cardiff in November 2024.
Nayacalevu’s arrival at Ospreys comes at a crucial time as the team looks to enhance their league performance and strengthen their roster in the United Rugby Championship. This signing highlights the increasing trend of Fijian players transitioning between clubs and making significant contributions across different leagues.
With his extensive experience and proven leadership abilities, Nayacalevu is anticipated to play a vital role in the Ospreys’ ambitions, particularly as they gear up for important fixtures, including a key European Challenge Cup match against Scarlets. Fans and analysts are optimistic that his addition will make a considerable difference in the team’s performance moving forward, bringing a blend of skill and determination to the squad.
