Despite facing charges for drink driving, Kavekini Tanivanuakula, a forward for the Fiji men’s sevens rugby team, remains a candidate for selection to participate in the upcoming Perth 7s tournament later this month.
Fiji’s head coach Osea Kolinisau made this announcement during a training session with the squad on Tuesday. Tanivanuakula, a former Natabua High School student, arrived at camp alongside his teammates to prepare for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament scheduled for next week.
Tanivanuakula made his debut for the national team last month during the Dubai 7s and also played in the Cape Town leg of the tournament. He was arrested on December 14 for alleged drink driving at the Nadi Temple checkpoint. His court appearance is scheduled for February 17, 2025.
Kolinisau addressed the issue with Tanivanuakula, highlighting the importance of decision-making, especially for newcomers to the team. He emphasized that Tanivanuakula’s role as a representative of Fiji comes with significant responsibilities and that he must serve as a role model. The coach noted that Tanivanuakula has shown improvement and has learned from this experience.
Furthermore, Kolinisau stressed the importance of players setting a positive example for younger generations by demonstrating kindness, respect, and accountability.
A final squad for the Perth 7s will be announced after the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, which runs from January 24-26.
This situation serves as a reminder that even in moments of setback, there is an opportunity for personal growth and positive change. Tanivanuakula’s journey may inspire others that mistakes can lead to valuable lessons, reinforcing the significance of responsibility both on and off the field.
