Fiji under-20 flanker Sam Chapman emphasizes the importance of mental preparation in rugby, highlighting a need for humility and adaptability as he gears up for the Super Rugby U20 competition in New Zealand. As he prepares to participate from March 15-22, Chapman acknowledges the challenge of aligning his playing style with the expectations set by his coaches.

“You have to forget, to learn; you have to forget what you know and learn what the coaches tell you,” Chapman remarked, underscoring the complexities of performance at this competitive level. Originating from Qarani in Gau and a graduate of Dunstan High School, he recognizes that a successful team is built upon attention to the small details within each player’s role.

Chapman noted the significance of teamwork, which is even more vital with new players joining the squad. “If these young boys play to their best, then they deserve to wear the jersey,” he stated, reinforcing the values inherited from his cousin, former Flying Fijians captain Mosese Rauluni, and the broader legacy of Fijian rugby.

While his long-term career in rugby remains uncertain, Chapman is committed to prioritizing his development and representing Fiji, stating, “I always wanted to play for Fiji, but I never really knew how to get there.” His journey reflects the dedication and determination of many young athletes as they strive to make their mark in the sport.

This upcoming competition represents not just a platform for showcasing talent, but also an opportunity for personal growth and team cohesion. With a strong focus on discipline and learning, Fijian youth rugby continues to foster a bright future for its players.
