Fiji’s Rugby Rising Star Set for Debut in Pacific Nations Cup Final

Fiji rugby sevens player Ponipate Loganimasi is expected to make his Test debut for the Flying Fijians in the Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan, taking place at the Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Osaka. This development comes after head coach Mick Byrne announced Ilaisa Droasese would replace Epeli Momo on the wing, creating an opportunity for Loganimasi, who is set to be included on the bench.

Byrne praised Loganimasi’s training performance, expressing optimism about the Olympic silver medalist making his debut. He noted the positive competition among players vying for positions in the match squad, with rookie lock Mesake Vocevoce and prop Meli Tuni also returning to the lineup. Vocevoce had missed the semi-final against the USA due to his father’s passing, while Tuni steps in for the injured Peni Ravai.

“The preparation has been excellent, despite the hot and humid weather,” Byrne stated. He emphasized that the team remains well-organized and focused on their upcoming challenge. The team has maintained rigorous training sessions, with energy levels conserved for the final match. Byrne also mentioned that some players, including Peni Ravai and Selestino Ravutaumada, have been dealing with injuries, but the rest of the squad has been managing well.

He highlighted Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula’s outstanding performance at fullback, as the team prepares to face Japan in the final scheduled to kick off at 10:05 PM.
