Fiji’s Rugby Rising Star: Could Karawalevu Join Drua Next Season?

Fiji’s fullback Vuate Karawalevu has garnered attention for his strong defense and precise kicking during the Flying Fijians’ recent win over Samoa. Glen Jackson, head coach of the Fijian Drua, mentioned that there is a possibility that Karawalevu, who hails from Dravuwalu in Kadavu, could join the Drua next season.

The 23-year-old was previously the captain of Marist Brothers High School’s rugby team and also won a gold medal in the 400 meters at the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics. Jackson highlighted that Karawalevu would enhance their backline.

Karawalevu played for the Kaiviti Silktails in 2021 and represented Fiji Bati at the 2021 Rugby World Cup. Currently, he is contracted with the Waratahs for two seasons. Jackson noted that 14 Drua players contributed to the Flying Fijians’ solid 42-16 victory over Samoa in the Pacific Nations Cup on August 23 at HFC Bank Stadium, Suva.

Looking ahead, the Drua will conduct their pre-season camp in Kadavu, with plans for improvements at their training base to create a better environment for developing top-level players. The return of Joseva Tamani is also a significant boost, as he can play both back row and lock positions.

New signings Peni Ravai and Inia Tabuavou are expected to strengthen the team. Jackson mentioned Ravai’s extensive experience, which will be valuable for mentoring the front-row players, while Tabuavou, who recently made his second test appearance against Samoa, displayed impressive speed, defense, and determination.

In addition, Baden Stephenson, the new interim general manager for Fijian Drua, announced plans for a 10s tournament on December 13, aiming to make it an international event that includes Skipper teams.
