Former USA Women’s 7s coach Richard Walker has officially been appointed as the new head coach of the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team, as announced by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU). He succeeds Saiasi Fuli, who concluded his tenure in December.
Walker brings over 15 years of coaching experience across various rugby levels, including significant roles with USA Rugby, Japan Women’s 7s, and Auckland Storm. Known for his high-performance standards, Walker’s impressive track record includes leading the Seattle Seawolves to a Major League Rugby Championship and coaching the USA Women’s 7s team during the Rio Olympic Games and the World Cup in San Francisco, where they exceeded expectations.
The FRU has expressed confidence in Walker’s ability to shape the future of the Fijiana 7s squad, particularly in player development and program leadership. His wealth of international expertise is seen as vital for the team’s preparations for upcoming international events, such as the HSBC SVNS Series and their path to Olympic qualification.
Moreover, the FRU has acknowledged the contributions of interim Head Coach Timoci Volavola and anticipates a collaborative effort that will enhance the team’s performance on the world stage. Walker’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for women’s rugby in Fiji, with the potential to elevate the team and inspire a new generation of players.
Overall, this leadership change brings a renewed sense of hope within the Fijian rugby community, with expectations in place for a bright future that combines talent and strategic vision under Walker’s guidance.
