The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is in the early stages of planning a Test match in Fiji scheduled for October 10, 2025, as a lead-up to the Pacific Bowl Championship. Wise Kativerata, the head coach of the Fiji Bati, has confirmed discussions with two nations to finalize the event, expressing his intent to host it during Fiji Day celebrations.
Kativerata reflected on the successes of recent sporting events, such as the pre-season National Rugby League match between the Newcastle Knights and Melbourne Storm at Lautoka’s Churchill Park, which took place on February 24. He highlighted the Pacific Bowl Championship that was held in Suva two months prior as a significant boost for the game in Fiji. Looking ahead, Kativerata emphasized the necessity of hard work in developing a pathway for players, particularly with Papua New Guinea coming into the mix.
Plans for 2025 also include establishing an academy focusing on players aged 14 to 18 across Fiji, with an emphasis on recruiting talent from schools and islands like Vanua Levu. Kativerata aims to foster a stronger mindset among young players, stressing that reaching the top levels of the sport requires dedication and time.
In other news, Kativerata mentioned Brandon Wakeham, the former West Tigers halfback, who is now eligible for selection in the Fiji Bati squad after charges against him were dropped. Wakeham’s potential contribution will be evaluated based on his performance in high-level competitions, such as reserve grade or NRL, as the team prepares for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
This vision for the future of Fiji rugby instills hope and excitement among fans and players alike, as the FNRL takes proactive steps to enhance the sport’s visibility and development in the region. The establishment of pathways and academies signals a commitment to nurturing local talent and ensuring that Fiji’s rich rugby heritage continues to thrive on both local and international stages.
