Fiji’s rugby coach Mick Byrne has announced a robust lineup for their upcoming match against Australia, showcasing a mix of experienced players and exciting new talent. Among the standout inclusions is Salesi Rayasi, a former Hurricanes player who will be making his Test debut. He is one of two uncapped players in the squad, following in the footsteps of his father, Filipe Rayasi, who represented Fiji 13 times.

The roster also features several top overseas players, including Bristol’s Kalaveti Ravouvou and Bill Mata, who will play significant roles in the match. The starting backline is bolstered by heavyweights such as Josua Tuisova and Iosefo Masi with Jiuta Wainiqolo rounding out the outside backs. Meanwhile, Simone Kuruvoli and Caleb Muntz will fill the crucial halfback positions after Frank Lomani suffered an injury.

Tevita Ikanivere will captain the team from the hooker position, accompanied by Peni Ravai and Eroni Mawi in the front row. Isoa Nasilasila and Temo Mayanavanua complete the tight five, with Lekima Tagitagivalu and Elia Canakaivata joining Mata in the back row. Philip Baselala, who has made a remarkable ascent since joining the Drua, is poised for his debut from the bench.

Byrne expressed enthusiasm about the team’s chemistry, stating, “All our players have come down from the north, who have gelled well together as a team. It’s an exciting opportunity for us to get in against Australia in Australia.” Fiji is aiming to secure their first victory in Australia in over 70 years, having recently shocked the Wallabies with a 22-15 win during the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

This match, scheduled for Sunday, provides Fiji with a platform to further establish their presence in international rugby, particularly in a Lions year that has generated considerable excitement. The blend of seasoned and fresh talent highlights Fiji’s ongoing development as a rugby nation. Fans are eager to witness what promises to be a thrilling encounter, as the Flying Fijians strive to both secure a win and inspire the next generation of rugby players in Fiji.
