The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) is actively championing the importance of preparing athletes for life beyond their sports careers. Chairman Akuila Masi emphasized the need for players to adopt a proactive mindset regarding their futures, urging them to pursue education and career opportunities alongside their rugby commitments.

Masi explained that while rugby league can be a lucrative career, athletes must envision their lives 5 to 10 years down the line, as many players face challenges transitioning after retirement. He pointed out that some former professional athletes have successfully invested in properties and businesses, and this is the standard the FNRL aims to establish for all players.

In line with this initiative, Masi expressed support for Isake Katonibau’s proposal advocating for free education for national rugby representatives, highlighting the organization’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded individuals. He stated, “We want players to go to school, play rugby league, and seize opportunities.”

The FNRL is gaining support from the National Rugby League (NRL) in Australia, which is contributing resources to enhance the development of the sport in Fiji. This backing is essential as the FNRL strives to expand its reach and create a sustainable future for rugby league players in the nation.

Additionally, the momentum of rugby league in Fiji aligns with a broader push for youth engagement, with over 100 schools participating in the sport and growing interest among girls, evidenced by the formation of 34 girls’ teams. This growth showcases the sport’s increasing appeal and its capacity to offer valuable life skills, discipline, and career pathways for Fijian youth.

The focus on educational initiatives and proactive planning heralds a hopeful future for Fiji’s sports landscape, promoting a culture of responsibility and foresight among aspiring athletes. As the community rallies around these developments, there is optimism that rugby league will not only uplift individual players but also contribute positively to society.
