Prominent Wests Tigers five-eighth Losana Lutu is among eight NRLW players selected to represent the Fiji Bulikula in the upcoming Pacific Bowl Championship. This selection was confirmed by Bulikula head coach Joe Rabele over the weekend.
“We traveled to Australia to scout for talent, and we’ve selected eight players,” Rabele stated. “Included in this group is Losana Lutu, who plays as a halfback for the Wests Tigers.”
Born in Suva and a product of Campbelltown juniors, Lutu has quickly advanced through the ranks at Wests Tigers. Known for her exceptional running skills, she had a standout season in 2022, playing a crucial role in New South Wales’ victory in the Under-19s State of Origin and helping the Wests Tigers secure their first title in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership. Lutu’s contract with the Tigers extends until the conclusion of the 2026 season.
Rabele emphasized that the team would assemble the optimal combination of players for their match against Cook Islands Moana on October 26 in Suva, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup Women.
“We are continuously monitoring the women’s games within the local league,” said Rabele, who previously led the Bati to the semi-finals of the 2008 Rugby League World Cup. “Currently, I have several girls in mind to be part of the proposed 35-player squad, but we need NRL’s approval regarding their eligibility.”
He noted significant room for growth, particularly in enhancing the local competition’s standards. “This qualifier is crucial for us,” Rabele remarked.
Aware of the challenges ahead, Rabele aims to secure a spot in the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup, but he acknowledges that strategic planning for the qualifiers is essential.
“We have a strong team and are merely awaiting NRL clearance,” he added, mentioning that several high school players from Lami Steelers will be included in the qualifying squad. He indicated that half of the 35-member team would comprise locally-based players.
Rabele reflected on the previous year, stating that the absence of Fiji Bulikula from the World Cup was a setback. “This year presents us with an opportunity to discover and refine our talent. Our final selection will feature a balanced mix of players,” he concluded.
