Fiji’s Rugby League Ambitions Take a Major Leap: What’s Next?

Fiji’s proposal to form men’s and women’s teams for the 2026 National Rugby League (NRL) received a significant endorsement. This development follows Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s recent correspondence with Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, expressing his backing for the bid and the necessity for Fiji to secure an expansion license for participation in the NRL Premiership.

In an interview, Rabuka affirmed his commitment to advocating for Fiji’s bid, stating he will continue discussions with Australian officials. The Prime Minister, a Life Member of the Fiji National Rugby League, emphasized the substantial benefits the sport would bring to the region, enhance the Fiji-Australia relationship, and positively impact communities, corporate sectors, and tourism in Fiji.

This advancement comes on the heels of the Cabinet’s endorsement of Fiji’s bid in March. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Biman Prasad noted that the National Budget includes tax incentives for companies or organizations willing to sponsor Fiji’s men’s and women’s teams in the NRL.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru highlighted Fiji’s rich talent pool that can compete effectively in the NRL against Australian and New Zealand clubs. He stated that many local players aspire to play in the NRL, viewing it as a valuable pathway for their careers, and mentioned ongoing efforts to develop another international stadium with the Fiji Sports Council.

If Fiji secures the NRL license, the country would host 17 home games, along with three pre-season matches and potential additional matches should they qualify for the finals.

Viliame Gavoka, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, expressed optimism about Fiji’s NRL bid, mentioning the significant implications for sports tourism with many events potentially held in Fiji. He stated that securing the bid would be instrumental for Fiji’s presence in the Australian market, citing Australia’s strong affinity for rugby league as a key factor.

Additionally, two Fijian players will compete in the NRL Grand Final at Accor Stadium in Sydney. Sunia Turuva plays for defending champions Penrith Panthers, while Tui Kamikamica represents Melbourne Storm, both players belong to the Fiji Bati national rugby league team. Over the years, several Fijian players have participated in NRL Grand Finals, showcasing the country’s contribution to the sport.
