Fiji’s Rugby Leader Aims for World Cup Glory

Fiji Bulikula captain Talei Holmes expressed that the players have forged a robust connection in their brief time together.

“We have developed a bond already off the field through devotions and team meetings, which is the most crucial aspect,” she stated.

Holmes recognized the strength of the Cook Islands team, particularly noting the threat posed by Kiana Takairangi at full-back.

“We need to tighten our ruck and maintain our defense,” she advised.

Having represented Fiji twice before, Holmes shared that being named captain this year is a significant milestone for her. “I never expected this opportunity to come so soon,” she said. “I’m very excited and eager to lead the girls.”

Holmes is thrilled to participate in the Pacific Championship, marking her first visit to the country. “It means a lot to me to witness the younger generation coming up. It’s incredible, and I’m so excited to play in front of them,” she remarked.

The team is focused on their goal of qualifying for the 2026 Women’s Rugby League World Cup. “It would mean everything to the country if we achieve qualification,” Holmes added.

“We are preparing thoroughly so we are ready to compete on Saturday.”

Holmes recently played for the Cronulla Sharks, who narrowly lost to the Sydney Roosters 32-28 in the NRLW grand final two weeks ago.

In related news, Fetu Samoa will observe the matchup between the Bulikula and Cook Islands Moana on Saturday, following their victory over Tonga 30-16.

The winner of the Fiji-Cook Islands match will head to Auckland to face Samoa at Go Media Stadium on November 2, with a World Cup spot at stake. Tonga and the losing team from Saturday’s match at HFC Stadium will be eliminated from contention, while the runner-up in Auckland will compete in the World Series in 2025 for the final slot at RLWC2026.

The Auckland winner will also face the third-placed team from the Pacific Cup at CommBank Stadium on November 10, vying for a chance to gain promotion to the top tier next year.
