Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai highlighted that the standards displayed by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as motivation for the nation and the youth aspiring to represent Fiji. This statement was made during a welcoming ceremony on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and loved ones.

Tuwai acknowledged that, despite the team’s performance not meeting expectations, they have the potential to bounce back. He expressed gratitude for divine protection and support during the preparations for the Olympics and their safe return. He thanked coaches, management, and families for their unwavering support, emphasizing the significance of their contributions in representing Fiji on the global stage.

While the team fell short of winning the expected gold medal, Tuwai apologized to the nation for not achieving the desired result. He noted the difficulty of being away from family for an extended period during their Olympic journey.

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised both the Fiji 7s and the Fijiana 7s teams for their performances and commended the coaching and management staff for their dedication. He specifically acknowledged Osea Kolonisau and his family for their continuous support of the teams.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, mentioned that the gathering was meant to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of both teams, which have brought great pride to the nation. He commended the teams for their resilience and skill in facing formidable opponents in Paris, remarking that their efforts have inspired the next generation of Fijian athletes to aspire to wear the national jersey.

Mazey expressed immense joy and gratitude, noting their accomplishment in winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games. He recognized the behind-the-scenes efforts of the coaching and medical staff and acknowledged that the silver medal symbolizes the hard work, sacrifices, and countless hours of practice the athletes invested.

He reminded everyone that, although they did not bring home gold, their achievement was still significant and set the stage for further success. Mazey encouraged continued support for the teams, urging them to view the silver medal as a stepping stone to even greater achievements in the future.

Lastly, he advised the players to take a break, spend time with their families, and recharge for the upcoming challenges.
