Fiji’s Rugby Heroes: Rising from Silver to Glory!

Team Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai emphasized that the standards exhibited by both teams during the 2024 Paris Olympics could inspire the nation and youth aspiring to represent Fiji. This statement was made during a welcoming ceremony for the men’s and women’s teams on August 4, 2024, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.

While acknowledging that the results did not meet expectations, Tuwai expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back. He began by thanking God for his guidance and protection during the preparation for the Paris campaign and for their safe return.

Tuwai expressed gratitude to the coaches, management, and the support of families, friends, and loved ones, acknowledging the collective effort that contributed to their participation in the Olympics. He also apologized to the nation for not achieving the desired color of medal, recognizing the high expectations placed upon them.

The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances, commending the coaches and management for their support throughout the tournament. He acknowledged the vital role of leadership and expertise in the teams’ successes and highlighted the dedication of Mr. Osea Kolonisau and his family.

Peter Mazey, interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, remarked that the gathering was to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of both teams, which have instilled immense pride in Fiji. He noted that from the moment the teams stepped onto the grand stage in Paris, they showcased the heart and skill intrinsic to Fijian rugby, rising to every challenge with resilience and determination.

Mazey stated that each achievement inspired a new generation of athletes to aspire to wear the iconic Fijian jersey. He expressed gratitude to the coaching staff, medical team, and others behind the scenes, emphasizing that their dedication was crucial in guiding the teams’ success.

As the teams returned home, he stressed that the silver medal represents more than just an accolade; it symbolizes the extensive preparation, sacrifices, and hard work invested. While gold was not secured, the achievement remains noteworthy, serving as a foundation for future endeavors.

Mazey encouraged ongoing support for the teams, asserting that the silver medal should be seen as a stepping stone to even greater achievements in rugby, reinforcing Fiji’s legacy in the sport. He concluded by urging the teams to take time to rest and reconnect with their families before facing new challenges ahead.
