Team Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai remarked that the performance delivered by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could motivate the nation and inspire young athletes aspiring to represent Fiji. This statement was made at a welcoming ceremony for the teams, organized by the Fiji Rugby Union on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.
Tuwai acknowledged that although the outcome was not what many had anticipated, the team possesses the resilience to bounce back. He began by expressing gratitude to God for guidance and protection throughout their preparations and the campaign in Paris, as well as for their safe return. He thanked coaches, management, and teammates for their commitment to representing the nation in such a prestigious event as the Olympic Games.
He also extended thanks to their families for their unwavering support, saying, “Vinaka Vakalevu” (thank you very much). Tuwai expressed regret for not achieving the desired medal color and apologized to the nation for falling short of expectations, acknowledging the emotional toll of being away from loved ones during training.
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised both the men’s and women’s teams for their efforts and commended the coaches and management for their support throughout the tournament. Saukuru noted that their leadership was vital to the teams’ successes and recognized the continuous support of Osea Kolonisau and his family.
Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey stated that the event was a celebration of the outstanding achievements of both teams, which brought immense pride to the country. He highlighted the tenacity and skill displayed by the players on the world stage and emphasized how their performance has inspired a new generation of athletes dreaming of wearing the Fijian jersey.
Mazey highlighted that winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games was a historic accomplishment and expressed gratitude to the coaching and medical staff, as well as those who supported the teams behind the scenes. He emphasized that dedication played a crucial role in their success and reminded everyone that the silver medal signifies more than an accolade; it symbolizes perseverance and hard work.
As the teams returned home, he encouraged continued support for Fiji’s rugby aspirations, positioning the silver medal as a stepping stone for future achievements. He thanked the teams for their representation at the Olympics, acknowledging that even though they faced tough opponents, their efforts deserved recognition. He concluded by urging the players to take time off to recharge before facing upcoming challenges.
