Team Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the level of performance displayed by both the men’s and women’s teams at the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as an inspiration for the nation and the youth aspiring to represent Fiji. His remarks came during a welcoming ceremony for both teams on August 4, 2024, hosted by the Fiji Rugby Union at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, with family and friends in attendance.

While acknowledging that the team’s results may not have met expectations, Tuwai emphasized their resilience and ability to bounce back. “First of all, I’d like to thank God for the protection and guidance during our month of preparation leading to the campaign in Paris, and for safely bringing us back,” he said. He expressed gratitude towards the coaches, management, and teammates for their commitment to defending the nation during the prestigious Olympic Games.

Tuwai also extended his appreciation to the families, noting, “Thank you very much to our mothers, fathers, wives, children, girlfriends, and boyfriends for your unwavering support.” He offered a heartfelt apology for not securing the medal color hoped for, acknowledging that the team’s effort fell short at the last moment.

Spending a month away from loved ones was challenging, he noted. The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their efforts and acknowledged the support from coaches and management throughout the tournament. He highlighted the importance of leadership and support in their success and recognized Osea Kolonisau and his family for their ongoing dedication to the team.

Interim chairman of the Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board, Peter Mazey, remarked that the gathering was to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of both teams, which brought immense pride to the nation. He acknowledged their hard work and determination, stating, “From the moment you set foot on the grand stage in Paris, you showcased the heart that defines Fijian rugby.”

Mazey commended the teams for their resilience against formidable opponents, emphasizing that their performance has inspired young athletes to aspire to represent Fiji. He declared, “Thank you; you have made history by winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.”

He also acknowledged the commitment of the coaching staff, medical team, and others behind the scenes, stating their dedication has been pivotal in the team’s success. As the teams welcomed their heroes back, he reminded everyone that the silver medal signifies more than just a reward; it represents hard work and sacrifices made along the way.

While acknowledging the lack of a gold medal, Mazey insisted that this achievement is still significant. He encouraged continued support for the teams and suggested that the silver medal should serve as a stepping stone for future success, ensuring that Fiji remains a rugby powerhouse that inspires both the nation and the global community. He concluded with best wishes for the team’s future endeavors, reminding them to take time to relax and recharge with their families.
