TE Puke Intermediate Rugby Academy from New Zealand has arrived in Suva, Fiji, to scout young rugby talent, marking an exciting opportunity for local players. A two-day trial is currently taking place at Bidesi ground, where around fifty boys from various schools participated on the first day, with more athletes expected to join the trials today.

The academy, which has been scouting Fijian talent since 2016, aims to award two scholarships. These scholarships will allow selected players to train and study in New Zealand for six months, immersing themselves in both rugby and local culture. Darren Harvey, head of the academy, noted the unique skills that Fijian players contribute to the game, highlighting qualities like speed, flair, and natural offloading ability. “We’re not looking for big, strong players; we have that in New Zealand already. What we want is the Fijian flair that sets these boys apart,” said Harvey.

The selected players will benefit from extensive rugby development, alongside an opportunity to participate in New Zealand’s club rugby and compete in the prestigious 2025 Zespri AIMS Games. Past scholarship recipients from the academy include players like Simione Rarasea from Marist Brothers Primary and Josese Vakataki, who is now with Wellington’s Scots College. While the academy does not guarantee high school scholarships, many talented players often attract interest from New Zealand’s educational institutions.

The initiative echoes the broader commitment seen within Fiji’s rugby landscape, such as the recent establishment of the Fijian Drua Academy, which has begun its own journey of nurturing young talent. By providing structured training and comprehensive development programs, both academies represent a hopeful future for Fijian rugby, inspiring young athletes to aspire to excellence in sports and achieving their dreams on an international level.

The trials continue today with two players set to earn what could be a life-changing opportunity, reinforcing the belief that Fijian rugby talent continues to shine both locally and on the world stage. This collaboration between New Zealand and Fiji showcases the potential for growth and excellence in rugby, offering hope for the sport’s future in the region.
