Grassroots Rugby Takes Center Stage: Exciting Changes for Fiji Marist Sevens!

Fiji’s Rugby Festival: Affordable Fun and Rising Stars Await!

The 49th Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament, taking place from March 20-22 at the HFC Bank Stadium, aims to bolster grassroots rugby by implementing reduced ticket prices. Tournament director Lawrence Tikaram highlighted this cost-effective initiative during an event in Suva, encouraging fans to attend at a mere $22 for three days of live games. This online-exclusive pricing allows spectators to witness over 200 matches featuring 95 teams and 1,500 players.

To further foster community support, Tikaram invited rugby fans to experience and celebrate emerging talent on the field. Notably, the tournament will offer financial incentives, with cash prizes totaling $48,800. This includes $5,000 awarded to the women’s champion and various stakes from $2,000 for first place to $1,000 for third in the Discovery Shield, which focuses on self-funded grassroots teams.

The participation includes 52 teams in the men’s division and nine in the women’s category, as well as divisions for U18-21 boys and girls. This event not only embodies a competitive spirit but also emphasizes inclusivity, enhancing community ties and promoting youth engagement, thereby facilitating the development of rugby in Fiji.

Sponsorship from entities like Pacific Energy plays a crucial role in cultivating future rugby talent, affirming the tournament’s significance as a communal celebration. The affordable ticket prices and substantial prize funds offer a promising outlook for grassroots rugby in the region, reflecting the deep connection between the sport and the Fijian community.

As the tournament approaches, teams are eagerly completing their preparations for what is set to be an exhilarating event, promoting unity and sporting enthusiasm among both locals and visitors, all while celebrating Fiji’s rich rugby culture.
