The excitement is building for the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament, set to take place from January 16 to 18, 2025, at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. This year’s event carries an extra layer of anticipation as it may mark the final appearances of rugby legends Jerry Tuwai and Rosko Specman in the sevens format, both of whom will represent the Mike Friday Select 7s team.

Tuwai, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and former World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year, has recently added a silver medal from the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics to his distinguished career. Known for his remarkable skill and leadership, Tuwai embodies the spirit of rugby in Fiji, showcasing humility, flair, and a deep connection to the sport.

In parallel, Specman, affectionately known as “Specmagic” for his extraordinary speed and agility, played a crucial role in South Africa’s success during the 2017/2018 HSBC World Series. Since then, he has transitioned into 15s rugby, continuing to exhibit his talents with the Cheetahs in the Pro 14 league, while also earning bronze medals at both the Rio (2016) and Paris (2024) Olympics.

The 2025 Coral Coast 7s will host 44 teams, including 16 men’s, 16 youth, and 12 women’s teams. This diverse lineup not only strengthens the competition but also highlights Fiji’s rich rugby culture. Other notable athletes joining Tuwai and Specman in the Mike Friday Select 7s team include former Irish 7s captain Harry McNulty and American player Matai Leuta, along with promising local talents such as Lasaro Bogisa and Iowane Teba.

The tournament’s free admission policy is designed to encourage community involvement, ensuring that fans from all backgrounds can join in celebrating the electrifying atmosphere of rugby. As the event approaches, it stands as not only a potential farewell to two giants of the sport but also a heartening opportunity to inspire the next generation of athletes.

In summary, the Coral Coast 7s tournament promises to be a memorable occasion that merges the legacy of established legends with the enthusiasm of emerging players. It serves as a testament to the enduring love for rugby in Fiji and is geared towards nurturing the sport’s future within the community.
