The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is under pressure to develop a comprehensive business strategy aimed at achieving the remarkable goal of winning a Rugby World Cup title. During an exclusive conversation with FijiNikua magazine, John Sanday, chairman of Fiji Rakavi Football Union Limited (FRFUL), emphasized the importance of transitioning from limited resources to a more robust financial foundation that supports the ambitions of the Flying Fijians.
Sanday highlighted Fiji’s impressive history in rugby, noting that the national XV side has reached the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals three times despite facing resource limitations. Drawing from his personal experience as part of the squad that reached Fiji’s inaugural quarterfinal, he mentioned that past teams relied heavily on talent, fitness, determination, and a strong love for their country.
“Our ultimate goal is to win the Rugby World Cup,” Sanday stated, reiterating the need for financial stability within the FRU. He plans to address the governance and financial structure of the organization, aiming to enhance revenue streams through a basic corporate framework. Sub-committees are to be established to handle specific approved projects, with announcements expected in early 2025.
Sanday also stressed the necessity of forming a rugby players’ association, which would act as a voice for the players within the FRU to improve their welfare and professional outcomes. Additionally, a member from this association may be appointed to the board to ensure player interests are represented at a high level.
The FRU’s board will conduct a review of its staff and internal structure to align with global rugby standards and push for Fiji Rugby’s elevation to tier one status.
This strategic approach shows promise for the future of Fijian rugby, illustrating a commitment not only to the sport and its players but also to laying down a solid foundation for sustainable success. With a focus on governance and financial strategy, the FRU is taking significant steps toward realizing its World Cup dreams, which could inspire the next generation of rugby talent in Fiji.
In summary, the Fiji Rugby Union is seeking to develop a solid business plan to strengthen its finances and governance, with the ultimate aim of competing for a Rugby World Cup title. This reflects a proactive approach to elevating Fijian rugby on the global stage.
