Fiji’s Road Woes: Who’s Responsible for the Construction Chaos?

The Fiji Sugar Corporation has distanced itself from any responsibility regarding the ongoing construction work on the roads adjacent to Damodar City in Labasa, as clarified by Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh. Singh attributed the traffic congestion issues in the area to the contractor’s operations rather than any obstruction from the FSC. He stressed that the timeline for the construction had always been in place, and that if the contractors had considered the potential problems from the outset, the current situation might have been mitigated.

Minister Singh expressed concern over the increasing traffic congestion caused by limited access to the complex and called for immediate action to address these issues. “FSC has never obstructed access, and we will not deny them the access,” he stated firmly.

Similarly, Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad pointed out that the increased investment in Vanua Levu is generating numerous infrastructure projects, which are inherently linked to frequent roadworks in the region. He acknowledged that the economic growth motivating these developments reflects a vibrant interest in commercial agriculture projects.

In light of the current challenges, measures are being implemented to manage traffic flow effectively during peak hours in Labasa. This includes enhanced police presence and traffic controls, signaling a proactive approach from local authorities to improve the situation during critical times.

Despite the existing frustrations regarding construction delays, these infrastructure developments can ultimately enhance transportation and accessibility in the region, fostering growth and investment in the long run. The government’s attention to the pressing issues of road construction demonstrates a commitment to improving overall infrastructure, which is a vital component for the ongoing economic progress in Vanua Levu.

Looking forward, stakeholders are encouraged to focus on collaboration and dialogue to address these challenges, paving the way for improved conditions and a brighter future for the community and its economy.
