Inia Seruiratu, the Leader of the Opposition in Fiji, is calling on the Government to give priority to road infrastructure, emphasizing its crucial role in the welfare of Fijians and the nation’s economic outlook. During a recent discussion with FijiLive, Seruiratu expressed concern over increasingly poor road conditions that have become a source of worry for both the public and businesses.
The deterioration of roadways has particularly impacted citizens residing in rural and remote regions, where hazardous driving conditions pose significant risks. Roads plagued with potholes, cracks, and erosion have made travel difficult and unsafe.
Seruiratu highlighted that the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) has faced challenges in addressing these pressing issues. He criticized the organization’s approach, stating, “A combination of poor planning and ineffective project management has exacerbated the situation, leading to delays in scheduled repairs and upgrades.” He pointed out that the absence of a comprehensive long-term strategy for maintaining Fiji’s expansive road network has further worsened the situation.
The impact of inadequate road infrastructure extends beyond travel inconvenience—it hampers access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and emergency response in remote areas, heightening socio-economic inequalities.
Seruiratu urged the FRA to take decisive action, advocating for increased resources dedicated to road maintenance and construction. He stressed that improved planning and oversight are necessary to reverse the current trends of neglect. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of holding contractors accountable for their work, insisting on stringent monitoring and the use of quality materials and skilled labor to achieve high standards in road repairs and construction.
