The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has issued a strong warning to road users nationwide to exercise caution due to the severe weather conditions currently affecting various regions, characterized by heavy rainfall and flash flooding. LTA’s Chief Executive Officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, emphasized that these increasingly adverse conditions pose significant risks to road safety.
Road users, including both motorists and pedestrians, are urged to stay alert and prioritize their safety. With the combination of intense rainfall, limited visibility, and flooded roads, the likelihood of accidents rises dramatically. Mr. Rokosawa advised the public to avoid non-essential travel, particularly in areas known to be prone to flooding, and cautioned travelers to remain informed about weather warnings and road closures.
Despite these warnings, the LTA has noticed alarming behaviors from some drivers who are ignoring safety protocols, notably speeding through floodwaters. The Authority is determined to take strict action against such recklessness to ensure the safety of all road users by imposing penalties to deter dangerous behavior.
Mr. Rokosawa provided a series of safety recommendations for drivers: adhere to speed limits, adjust driving according to the weather, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, use headlights during poor visibility, and plan for unexpected delays. He emphasized that respects for road closures and safety signs are crucial, as floodwaters can be deceptively treacherous.
In collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Roads Authority, municipal councils, and other stakeholders, the LTA is committed to monitoring road conditions and enhancing safety measures. The focus on public safety is paramount during these challenging weather conditions, and the LTA encourages everyone to stay informed through reliable weather sources and local news for updates on road and travel conditions.
As a friendly reminder, all road users are encouraged to remain vigilant and proactive in ensuring their safety and the safety of others during this challenging period. Many LTA branches, including those in Rakiraki, Ba, Nadi, Sigatoka, Navua, and Levuka, have temporarily closed due to flooding.
This situation presents a test of community spirit, as everyone can play a part in keeping our roads safe. By adhering to the advised measures and staying informed, we can navigate through this difficult time together.
