In a significant initiative aimed at rural development and poverty reduction, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reaffirmed the commitment of the People’s Coalition government to inclusive growth in Fiji through the Vanua Levu Road upgrade project. During a recent two-day visit to the Northern Division, Mr. Rabuka inspected the progress of this infrastructure venture, which is funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).
The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the $300 million road upgrade project, which aims to enhance transport networks across Vanua Levu, ultimately improving access to rural communities and opening new economic opportunities. He surveyed vital segments of the road, including the 15 km Nabouwalu Road in Bua and the 35 km stretch from Nabalebale to Dogoru along the Wailevu West Coast Road.
Mr. Rabuka emphasized that this initiative transcends mere infrastructure development; it is about creating pathways to wealth and improving the livelihoods of rural residents. He encouraged rural communities to view new roads as a means to generate local economic growth rather than as just links to urban centers.
Echoing the government’s Targeted Poverty Alleviation Programme, the Prime Minister reiterated the goal of addressing poverty at a local level, urging citizens to recognize the potential for economic wellness in their own communities. He shared personal anecdotes during the visit, expressing a deep connection to the region that strengthens his resolve to drive meaningful development.
A briefing at the provincial administrator’s office in Savusavu outlined the expected economic benefits of the upgraded roads, which include fostering growth in key sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy. Ambassador Robert Lee emphasized the partnership between Fiji and China in unlocking rural economic potential.
Additionally, the Prime Minister discussed the ongoing Mount Kasi mining issue, expressing hope for a resolution between competing miners and relevant authorities. He concluded his tour by meeting with senior civil servants, urging them to proactively address public service gaps and reinforce a unified national development approach.
Mr. Rabuka expressed his belief that the Vanua Levu Road upgrade project will act as a catalyst for broader national development, aligning with the Coalition Government’s vision for a prosperous and resilient Fiji.
This initiative not only symbolizes a critical investment in infrastructure but also embodies a strategic approach to community empowerment and sustainable economic growth. With road upgrades creating new opportunities, rural areas can thrive and reduce dependency on urban migration, fostering a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji.
