Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently visiting the Northern Division for two days to oversee the proposed road enhancements under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is accompanied by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This road upgrade initiative is being funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project has an estimated budget of FJD $300 million and is anticipated to become a key undertaking within this framework in Fiji.

During his visit, Rabuka emphasized the significance of incorporating local community feedback, ensuring that the road upgrades not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities for residents during the construction phase. Noteworthy sections of the project that were inspected include the 15km stretch of Nabouwalu Road from Bua to Nasolo and 35km of the Wailevu West Coast Road from Nabalebale to Dogoru.

Fiji Roads Manager North Delana Rabalaka joined the tour to share insights on the project’s technical and logistical details. The delegation also participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, where Provincial Administrator Jovesa Naqarikau outlined the region’s economic potential, which is expected to benefit significantly from enhanced road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed approval of the project’s objectives, highlighting its potential to bolster infrastructure and foster regional development. He pointed out that the upgraded roads will significantly impact sectors such as tourism and renewable energy, including hydropower, while also improving access for rural communities.

In summary, this project is poised to uplift the Northern Division, enhancing connectivity, boosting job creation, and providing new opportunities for economic growth. The collaboration between Fiji and China demonstrates a commitment to developing sustainable infrastructure that will benefit both the community and the economy. The focus on local input and job creation reflects an understanding of the importance of fostering community engagement in such initiatives.
