In a significant stride toward rural development and poverty alleviation, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reiterated the People’s Coalition government’s dedication to promoting inclusive growth in Fiji, particularly through the Vanua Levu Road upgrade project. Recently, Prime Minister Rabuka, alongside Fiji’s Ambassador to China, Robert Lee, completed a two-day tour in the Northern Division to assess the progress of the road upgrades, which are financed by China’s Belt and Road Initiative through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency.
The ambitious $300 million project is aimed at enhancing vital road networks around Vanua Levu, thereby increasing access for rural communities and opening up new economic possibilities. During his visit, Mr. Rabuka inspected various sections of the road, emphasizing that these improvements go beyond mere infrastructure, serving as “pathways to prosperity” that could better rural livelihoods and connectivity.
Mr. Rabuka underscored the necessity for residents to transform new roads into local opportunities rather than simply seeking them in urban centers. He reaffirmed the government’s Targeted Poverty Alleviation Programme, which initiates poverty reduction efforts village by village, and called upon communities to recognize the inherent potential within rural areas for growth and development.
Reflecting on personal ties to the region during the tour, Mr. Rabuka highlighted its significance to him both personally and professionally. He expressed hope that the development in the North would foster the economic benefits anticipated from improved transport, particularly in tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy sectors.
Ambassador Lee emphasized the initiative’s role in strengthening Fiji-China relations, aiming to unleash economic prospects in rural Fiji. The Prime Minister also mentioned plans to resolve ongoing issues regarding mining licenses in Mount Kasi, which remains a priority.
Concluding his visit, Mr. Rabuka urged civil servants to act decisively in addressing public service deficiencies, reinforcing his dedication to equitable national development. He confidently asserted that the Vanua Levu road upgrade project is poised to be a key driver for broader national progress, aligning with the Coalition Government’s vision for a connected and resilient Fiji.
This initiative paints a hopeful picture for rural Fiji, showcasing a commitment to transforming infrastructure into lasting opportunities and empowering communities to thrive. With continued focus and collective effort, the vision for a prosperous and connected Fiji can potentially be realized, ensuring that all citizens benefit from these developments.
