Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reiterated the commitment of the People’s Coalition government to promoting rural development and reducing poverty in Fiji through the significant Vanua Levu Road upgrade project. This initiative is part of a larger effort to stimulate inclusive economic growth in the country.

Mr. Rabuka, accompanied by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, Robert Lee, recently completed a two-day visit to the Northern Division. During his visit, he inspected various segments of the road improvements funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative via a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency.

The ambitious $300 million project is set to upgrade crucial road networks across Vanua Levu, enhancing accessibility for rural communities and opening new economic opportunities. Mr. Rabuka pointed out the importance of perceiving road improvements as more than just transportation links; they are key to transforming local economies and enhancing livelihoods.

He emphasized the role that rural infrastructure could play in empowering communities, urging residents to think creatively about how new roads might lead to local economic prospects, rather than merely seeking opportunities in urban centers.

The Prime Minister’s vision aligns with the government’s Targeted Poverty Alleviation Programme, which aims to eradicate poverty on a village-by-village basis. He expressed a desire for rural residents to recognize the wealth of opportunities available in their own areas, promoting wellness and sustainable living without the necessity of migrating to cities.

During his inspection, Mr. Rabuka also shared personal memories tied to the region, which reinforced his dedication to ensuring that these communities benefit from development.

As part of the tour, a briefing underscored the potential economic advantages of the upgraded roads, particularly in tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy sectors. Ambassador Lee highlighted the partnership between Fiji and China and its significance in unlocking economic potential in rural areas.

Additionally, the Prime Minister addressed the ongoing Mount Kasi mining issue and expressed optimism about resolving it through collaborative governance. He urged senior civil servants to take proactive measures to improve public service and pledged his commitment to balanced development across all regions of Fiji.

Mr. Rabuka concluded the tour with a strong belief that the Vanua Levu road upgrade will not only enhance connectivity but will also serve as a catalyst for broader national growth, supporting the Coalition Government’s vision for a resilient and prosperous Fiji.

This initiative illustrates the promise of rural transformation in Fiji, showing how improved infrastructure can lead to sustainable development and better livelihoods for local communities. The focus on local empowerment reflects a hopeful future, where opportunities abound beyond urban centers, fostering a connected and thriving nation.
