In a significant initiative aimed at advancing rural development and combating poverty, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reiterated the People’s Coalition government’s pledge to promote inclusive growth in Fiji through the Vanua Levu Road upgrade project. This commitment underscores the government’s focus on improving infrastructure as a means to enhance the livelihoods of rural communities.

Recently, Prime Minister Rabuka, alongside Robert Lee, Fiji’s Ambassador to China, undertook a two-day inspection tour of the Northern Division to assess the progress of road upgrades funded by China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The upgrades are financed through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA).

The Prime Minister noted that the $300 million project seeks to revitalize critical road networks across Vanua Levu, facilitating better access for rural areas and creating economic opportunities. Key segments of the road, such as the 15 km stretch of Nabouwalu Road in Bua and a 35 km section along the Wailevu West Coast Road, were highlighted during the inspection.

Mr Rabuka emphasized that the road upgrades represent much more than just infrastructure; they are pathways to prosperity. He encouraged residents to see roads as not only means of transportation but also as potential avenues for local economic growth rather than solely seeking opportunities in urban areas.

The government’s dedication to addressing poverty is encapsulated in its Targeted Poverty Alleviation Programme, which aims to eradicate poverty village by village. The Prime Minister stressed that rural areas hold vast potential for wellness and economic wealth, urging communities to recognize and harness local opportunities.

During his visit, Rabuka reflected on his personal connection to the region, recounting memories of his family’s history. He expressed a deep commitment to ensuring that these communities receive the development they deserve.

The anticipated economic benefits of the upgraded roads extend to sectors such as tourism, agriculture, and renewable energy, with Ambassador Lee highlighting the strong partnership between Fiji and China in propelling rural development.

The Prime Minister also addressed the ongoing Mount Kasi mining issue, expressing hope for a resolution between competing miners and the government.

In concluding his tour, Mr Rabuka engaged with senior civil servants, encouraging a collaborative approach to governance and public service improvement. He reassured the public that the focus on Vanua Levu was part of a broader national development strategy, rather than mere coincidence.

Rabuka’s confidence in the Vanua Levu road upgrade project is a promising indication of the Coalition Government’s vision for a connected and resilient Fiji, ultimately benefiting all citizens.

Overall, this project is a beacon of hope for the rural communities of Fiji, symbolizing the potential for significant economic transformation and empowerment through collective effort and infrastructure development.
