Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, along with Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee, is currently on a two-day tour of the Northern Division to evaluate the proposed upgrades to the roads under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This initiative is supported by a FJD $300 million grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) and falls under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of incorporating local input in the roadwork projects to not only improve connectivity but also to create job opportunities for residents during construction. During the visit, the team inspected critical segments of the project which include:
– 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road (Bua) to Nasolo
– 35 kilometers of Nabalebalale to Dogoru – Wailevu West Coast Road
Mr. Delana Rabalaka, the Fiji Roads Manager for the North, accompanied the delegation and provided insights about the project’s technical and logistical aspects. The delegation also participated in a briefing conducted by Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, which discussed the economic potential of the region that is likely to benefit from the upgraded road infrastructure.
Ambassador Lee voiced his approval of the project, highlighting its significance in enhancing infrastructure and stimulating regional growth. The anticipated improvements are expected to bolster tourism and renewable energy sectors, such as hydro-power, while improving access for rural communities.
This ambitious road upgrade project not only targets infrastructure enhancement but also aims for sustainable development by involving local communities and promoting economic opportunities. Such initiatives reflect a commitment to building a more connected and prosperous future for all Fijians.
