Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, alongside Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee, is currently on a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the proposed road improvements associated with the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This significant initiative, funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), falls under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
With an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project aims to significantly enhance Fiji’s infrastructure as part of BRI’s broader objectives in the region. During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka underscored the necessity of incorporating local perspectives into the developments to ensure that the roadworks not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities for local residents during the construction phase.
Key sections of the road that were inspected include 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road (Bua) to Nasolo and 35 kilometers from Nabalebalale to Dogoru – Wailapu West Coast Road. Fiji Roads Manager North, Mr. Delana Rabalaka, accompanied the delegation to provide expert insights into the project’s technical and logistical aspects.
The tour included a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, presented by Provincial Administrator Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, which detailed the economic opportunities the region could gain from the enhanced road infrastructure. Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project, affirming its vital role in bolstering infrastructure and regional development. He highlighted that the upgraded roads will not only stimulate the tourism and renewable energy sectors, such as hydro-power but will also improve access for rural communities.
