Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, alongside Fiji’s Ambassador to China, Robert Lee, is currently undertaking a two-day visit to the Northern Division. This visit focuses on reviewing the proposed upgrades to the roads under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, which is financed by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

With an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is positioned to be a key component of the BRI in Fiji. During his tour, Prime Minister Rabuka underscored the necessity of integrating local perspectives into the project to ensure it not only improves connectivity but also creates employment opportunities for local communities throughout the construction phase.

Significant segments of the road inspected during the tour include:

– 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road (Bua) to Nasolo
– 35 kilometers of Nabalebalale to Dogoru – Wailevu West Coast Road

The tour included insights from Mr. Delana Rabalaka, the Fiji Roads Manager North, who provided technical and logistical information about the project. Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing led by Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, which detailed the region’s economic potential, anticipated to receive a boost from the improved road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project, highlighting its significance in enhancing infrastructure and fostering regional development. He noted that the upgraded roads are expected to benefit crucial sectors such as tourism and renewable energy projects, including hydro-power, further improving access and connectivity for rural communities in the area.

Overall, this project not only represents an investment in infrastructure but also fosters hope for economic growth and community development in Fiji, emphasizing the importance of local collaboration and input in large-scale initiatives.
