Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, along with Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee, is currently undertaking a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the proposed road upgrades under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This initiative is financially supported by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

The Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is projected to cost around FJD $300 million, marking it as a significant undertaking within the framework of China’s BRI in Fiji. During the visit, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the necessity of including local stakeholders in the planning process to ensure the project not only improves transportation but also provides job opportunities for the local workforce during construction.

Key segments of the road being inspected include the 15 km stretch of Nabouwalu Road from Bua to Nasolo and the 35 km stretch of Nabalebalale to Dogoru, along the Wailevu West Coast Road. The Fiji Roads Manager North, Mr. Delana Rabalaka, accompanied the delegation, sharing insights into the project’s technical and logistical details.

Additionally, the delegation was briefed by Provincial Administrator of Savusavu, Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, who discussed the region’s economic potential and the anticipated benefits of improved road infrastructure. Ambassador Lee conveyed his approval of the project, underlining its significance in enhancing infrastructure while fostering regional development. He noted that the upgraded roads are anticipated to support key sectors, including tourism and renewable energy initiatives, such as hydro-power, while also improving access for rural communities.

This project stands to be a game-changer for the Northern Division, with its potential to create jobs and stimulate local economies by enhancing connectivity and accessibility. By prioritizing local input and involvement, the initiative not only focuses on infrastructural upgrades but also ensures that communities are integrated into the economic benefits that follow.

In summary, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is a vital undertaking that highlights Fiji’s commitment to improving infrastructure and is an excellent opportunity for local communities to engage in and benefit from the developmental process. These efforts align with broader goals of fostering sustainable growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the region.
