Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently undertaking a two-day visit to the Northern Division to evaluate the proposed road enhancements outlined in the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is joined by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.
This ambitious initiative is being funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The project carries an estimated budget of FJD $300 million and aims to be a key development under the BRI in Fiji.
During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the significance of engaging local communities in the project. He believes this will not only improve connectivity but also create employment opportunities for local workers throughout the construction process.
The delegation inspected crucial sections of the proposed improvements, including 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road from Bua to Nasolo, as well as 35 kilometers of the Nabalebale to Dogoru segment on the Wailevu West Coast Road. Fiji Roads Manager North Delana Rabalaka joined the tour to provide detailed information about the technical and logistical components of the project.
Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing led by Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Jovesa Naqarikau, at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu. This session highlighted the economic prospects for the region, showcasing the positive impact that enhanced road infrastructure is likely to have.
Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project, stressing its potential to fortify infrastructure and stimulate regional development. He noted that the upgraded roads are anticipated to invigorate vital sectors such as tourism and renewable energy projects, including hydropower, while also improving access and connectivity for rural communities.
In summary, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project presents a significant opportunity for economic growth in the Northern Division of Fiji, bridging communities and enhancing local employment prospects. The partnership with China under the Belt and Road Initiative not only strengthens infrastructure but also promotes regional development, ensuring a brighter future for the local populace.
