Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, joined by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee, is currently on a two-day trip to the Northern Division of Fiji. The purpose of this visit is to evaluate the proposed improvements to the roads as part of the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project.

This ambitious undertaking is backed by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), linking it to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is positioned to play a significant role in enhancing Fiji’s infrastructure and connectivity.

During his tour, Prime Minister Rabuka stressed the significance of involving local communities to ensure that the road upgrades not only enhance transportation links but also create job opportunities for residents during construction.

Key sections of the road that were inspected include:

– 15 km of Nabouwalu Road (Bua) to Nasolo
– 35 km of Nabalebalale to Dogoru – Wailevu West Coast Road

Additionally, Fiji Roads Manager North, Mr. Delana Rabalaka, provided insights into the technical and logistical details of the project during the visit. The delegation also participated in a briefing conducted by Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, the Provincial Administrator of Savusavu, at his office, where they discussed the region’s economic prospects that could be enhanced by the upgraded infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project, highlighting its potential to strengthen infrastructure and stimulate regional growth. He noted that improved roads are likely to benefit essential sectors such as tourism and renewable energy projects, including hydro-power, while also increasing access for rural communities.

This project not only aims to improve transportation but also promises to uplift local economies and empower communities, illustrating a commitment to sustainable development in Fiji.

In summary, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project represents a significant investment in Fiji’s future, with the potential to enhance connectivity, create jobs, and stimulate various sectors of the economy. Such initiatives reflect a proactive approach to development and cooperation that can lead to lasting benefits for all involved.
