Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently visiting Fiji’s Northern Division for two days to review the planned upgrades to the region’s roads, part of the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanying him is Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This vital project, with a budget of approximately FJD $300 million, is largely funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The upgrades aim to not only improve transportation infrastructure but also support local employment creation during the construction phase.

During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka inspected significant segments of the project, including 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road from Bua to Nasolo and 35 kilometers of the Nabalebale to Dogoru road on the Wailevu West Coast. Assisting him in this endeavor was Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, who provided important technical details on the project.

Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing with the Provincial Administrator of Savusavu, Jovesa Naqarikau, at the Provincial Administrator’s Office. This briefing highlighted the economic potential of the region, which stands to gain substantially from enhanced road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed his contentment with the project, underlining its significance in bolstering infrastructure and promoting regional development. He noted that the upgraded roads would notably benefit key sectors such as tourism and renewable energy initiatives, including hydropower, while improving access for rural communities.

In summary, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project represents a significant step forward for Fiji, promising to enhance connectivity, foster local employment, and stimulate economic growth through improved infrastructure. The collaboration between Fiji and China exemplifies the potential of international partnerships in driving development and prosperity in the region.
