Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently on a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the proposed upgrades to roads under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is being accompanied by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This significant project, which is supported by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of the People’s Republic of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), comes with an approximate budget of FJD $300 million. It aims to improve Fiji’s infrastructure, fostering better connectivity in the region.

During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka stressed the necessity of integrating local perspectives into the project, ensuring that the road upgrades not only enhance accessibility but also create job opportunities for residents during the construction phase. The inspection included notable sections such as the 15 km stretch of Nabouwalu Road (from Bua to Nasolo) and 35 km of the road from Nabalebale to Dogoru along the Wailevu West Coast.

Delana Rabalaka, the Fiji Roads Manager North, accompanied the Prime Minister during the tour, providing valuable insights into the technical and logistical components of the project. The delegation also attended a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Jovesa Naqarikau, which highlighted the economic potential of the region that stands to benefit immensely from these road improvements.

Ambassador Lee expressed his contentment regarding the project, noting its pivotal role in enhancing infrastructure and stimulating regional growth. The anticipated upgrades are expected to positively impact vital sectors, including tourism and renewable energy projects, such as hydropower, while also improving access for rural communities.

Overall, this initiative signifies a considerable investment in Fiji’s future, aiming to facilitate economic development and strengthen the nation’s infrastructure, thereby enhancing the quality of life for its residents. With a focus on local engagement and long-term benefits, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project promises to be a transformative effort for the region.
