Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, along with Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee, is currently on a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the planned road improvements under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This significant initiative, which is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is being funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), with an estimated budget of FJD $300 million.

During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka underscored the necessity of integrating local insights into the project. This approach aims not only to enhance transportation connectivity but also to create job opportunities for locals during the construction phase. Key sections of the existing roads inspected during the tour include the 15 km stretch from Nabouwalu Road (Bua) to Nasolo and the 35 km stretch from Nabalebalale to Dogoru, part of the Wailavu West Coast Road.

Mr. Delana Rabalaka, the Fiji Roads Manager North, accompanied the Prime Minister, providing technical and logistical information about the project. The delegation also participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, which highlighted the region’s economic potential and the enhancements that come with improved road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project and emphasized its importance in bolstering infrastructure and fostering regional development. He pointed out that the upgraded roads are expected to significantly benefit important sectors such as tourism and renewable energy initiatives, including hydro-power, which will enhance accessibility for rural communities.

This project reflects a promising development for Fiji, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to infrastructure advancement and economic growth while prioritizing local engagement in the development process.

Summary: Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is reviewing the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project, funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency, with an emphasis on local input to drive employment and economic growth.
