Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is on a focused two-day tour of Fiji’s Northern Division to assess the proposed upgrades to vital roads under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This significant initiative, funded by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), has an estimated budget of FJD $300 million.
During his visit, Rabuka stressed the need for local community involvement in the project, underlining that the road enhancements should not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities for locals during the construction phase.
Key segments inspected during the tour included a 15-kilometer stretch of the Nabouwalu Road (Bua) leading to Nasolo, and a 35-kilometer segment from Nabalebalale to Dogoru along the Wailevu West Coast Road. Accompanying the Prime Minister was Mr. Delana Rabalaka, the Fiji Roads Manager North, who provided insights into the technical and logistical aspects of the upgrades.
The delegation also participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu led by Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, which presented an overview of the region’s economic potential that stands to benefit immensely from the improved infrastructure.
Ambassador Robert Lee expressed his approval of the project, highlighting its importance in bolstering infrastructure and fostering regional development. He noted that the improved roadways are projected to enhance key sectors such as tourism and renewable energy initiatives, including hydro-power, while providing better access and connectivity for rural communities.
This project represents an optimistic step forward for Fiji, promising not only to enhance the nation’s infrastructure but also to create livelihoods and stimulate local economies in the northern region. It signals a commitment to sustainable development and public investment that can deliver considerable benefits to the people of Fiji.
