Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently undertaking a two-day visit to the Northern Division of Fiji to assess the proposed upgrades to roads under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanying him is Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.
This significant infrastructure initiative is supported by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), forming a key part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Fiji, with an estimated budget of FJD $300 million.
During his visit, Rabuka emphasized the need for local involvement in the project. He believes that engaging local communities will not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities during the construction phase.
The Prime Minister’s tour included inspections of critical sections of the road, specifically 15 km of Nabouwalu Road, from Bua to Nasolo, and 35 km of the Wailevu West Coast Road, connecting Nabalebale to Dogoru. Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, joined the tour to provide insights into the project’s technical and logistical dimensions.
Additionally, the delegation participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by the Provincial Administrator, Jovesa Naqarikau. The briefing highlighted the economic potential of the region, which is expected to see substantial benefits from the improved road infrastructure.
Ambassador Lee expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its importance in enhancing infrastructure and driving regional growth. He noted that the upgraded roads will likely bolster vital sectors such as tourism and renewable energy projects, especially hydropower. Furthermore, the improvements aim to enhance access and connectivity for rural communities, which could lead to long-term socio-economic benefits.
This road upgrade initiative showcases the commitment of both Fiji and China to improve infrastructure in the region, providing a hopeful outlook for local communities and the broader economy. The successful implementation of such projects could pave the way for future development and collaboration.
