Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently on a two-day visit to Fiji’s Northern Division to assess the proposed upgrades to roads under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. He is joined by Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This significant initiative is being financed through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). With an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project aims to play a pivotal role in enhancing Fiji’s infrastructure.

During his visit, Rabuka emphasized the need to involve local communities in the project to ensure that the roadworks not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities for residents during construction. The Prime Minister inspected critical segments of the project, including 15 kilometers of the Nabouwalu Road from Bua to Nasolo, and 35 kilometers from Nabalebale to Dogoru on the Wailevu West Coast Road.

Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, was also present to share insights into the technical and logistical elements of the project. The delegation participated in a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Provincial Administrator Jovesa Naqarikau, who outlined the region’s economic potential that could be unlocked through improved road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee praised the project for its significance in bolstering infrastructure and enhancing regional economic growth. He noted that the upgraded roads are anticipated to positively impact key sectors, including tourism and renewable energy projects such as hydropower, while also improving access and connectivity for rural communities.

This initiative represents a meaningful step forward for Fiji, promising to not only improve transportation but also to drive economic growth and community development. With local engagement and international support, the project has the potential to transform the region significantly.

Overall, the upgrades are positioned to facilitate better travel and trade, fostering hope for enhanced prosperity in the Northern Division.
