Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, along with Fiji’s Ambassador to China, Robert Lee, is currently engaged in a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the progress of the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This initiative, financially supported by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), has a projected budget of FJD $300 million.
During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized the necessity of incorporating local community input into the project. He stressed that while enhancing connectivity, the roadworks should also create local employment opportunities throughout the construction phase.
Key segments of the road infrastructure inspected during the tour included 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road, connecting Bua to Nasolo, and 35 kilometers from Nabalebalale to Dogoru on the Wailevu West Coast Road. Fiji Roads Manager North, Mr. Delana Rabalaka, accompanied the Prime Minister, offering critical insights into the technical and logistical aspects of the developments.
The delegation also participated in a briefing with Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, highlighting the area’s economic potential, which stands to gain significantly from the improved road infrastructure.
Ambassador Robert Lee expressed his positive outlook on the project, indicating its significance in enhancing regional infrastructure and fostering economic growth. He mentioned that the upgraded roads are anticipated to invigorate key sectors, including tourism and renewable energy projects such as hydro-power, while also improving accessibility for rural communities.
