Fiji’s national men’s football team, often referred to as the Bula Boys, is gearing up for the FIFA World Cup 2026 Oceania Qualifiers with an extensive training plan laid out by head coach Rob Sherman. In preparation for the upcoming tournament in March, Sherman has announced a 35-member extended squad that will convene at the Fiji FA Academy in Ba from February 9 to 23, during which the focus will be largely on local players.
Among the squad are 12 overseas-based players, although notable captain Roy Krishna will miss out due to ongoing injury rehabilitation. Following the initial camp, Sherman is set to finalize a 23-member squad to travel to Auckland on March 1 for further preparations, including friendly matches against Auckland FC and local Premiership clubs. The team is also scheduled to relocate to Wellington on March 12, where they are eager to challenge Wellington Phoenix in a key build-up match.
Acknowledging the importance of a diverse selection process, Sherman stated, “We’ve extended the squad to make sure we prepare and scrutinise a wide range of players and select the strongest squad possible.” He has expressed confidence that the training and fitness programs set forth will ensure players arrive in peak physical condition for the challenges ahead.
The culmination of these efforts will manifest in a highly-anticipated semi-final clash against the All Whites on March 21 at the Sky Stadium in Wellington. This match is seen as a crucial benchmark for the team as they strive to secure their spot in the World Cup.
The Bula Boys are determined to showcase their talents and resilience, with hopes high for a competitive performance that could enhance Fiji’s stature in international football. Overall, the positive outlook surrounds their dedication during the preparation phase, reflecting a promising future for Fijian football on the world stage.
