Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, along with Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee, has commenced a two-day visit to the Northern Division to assess the proposed road upgrades under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This significant initiative, supported by a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

With an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing Fiji’s infrastructure through the Belt and Road Initiative. During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka underscored the importance of including local input in the project, aiming to ensure that the roadworks not only improve connectivity but also create job opportunities for local communities during construction.

Key segments inspected during the tour include:

– 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road (Bua) to Nasolo
– 35 kilometers of Nabalebalebale to Dogoru – Waillevu West Coast Road

The delegation included the Fiji Roads Manager North, Mr. Delana Rabalaka, who provided insights on the project’s technical and logistical considerations. They also attended a briefing at the Provincial Administrator’s Office in Savusavu, led by Provincial Administrator Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, where they discussed the substantial economic potential of the region, anticipated to thrive with improved road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed his approval of the project, highlighting its importance for strengthening infrastructure and fostering economic development in the region. He noted that the upgraded roads will not only facilitate the growth of key sectors such as tourism and renewable energy, including hydropower, but will also enhance access and connectivity for rural communities, which is vital for their development.

The initiative reflects a positive step toward enhancing regional infrastructure and can potentially lead to improved economic opportunities for the local population. The collaborative effort between Fiji and China embodies hope for a more connected and prosperous future for communities in Vanua Levu.
