Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently on a two-day visit to Fiji’s Northern Division, where he is assessing the proposed road upgrades associated with the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. This significant initiative, which has an estimated budget of FJD $300 million, is being financed through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) under China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
During his visit, Prime Minister Rabuka underscored the importance of incorporating local perspectives on the project. He emphasized that the road improvements should not only enhance connectivity but also create local employment opportunities throughout the construction phase.
Key areas of the project that were inspected include:
– 15 kilometers of Nabouwalu Road (Bua) to Nasolo
– 35 kilometers of Nabalebale to Dogoru – Wailau West Coast Road
The Fiji Roads Manager North, Mr. Delana Rabalaka, accompanied the Prime Minister, offering insights into the technical and logistical elements of the project. Additionally, the delegation received a briefing from Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Mr. Jovesa Naqarikau, which highlighted the region’s economic potential that stands to benefit significantly from improved infrastructure.
Ambassador Lee, representing the People’s Republic of China, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting its crucial role in enhancing infrastructure and fostering regional growth. He pointed out that the upgraded roads are anticipated to invigorate key sectors such as tourism and renewable energy projects, including hydro-power, while improving access and connectivity for rural communities.
Given these developments, there is a sense of optimism surrounding the project. It not only promises to bolster infrastructure but also to stimulate local economies and create job opportunities, paving the way for a brighter future for the residents of Fiji’s Northern Division.
