Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka is currently on a two-day visit to the Northern Division, where he is assessing the proposed upgrades for road infrastructure under the Vanua Levu Road Upgrade Project. Accompanying him is Fiji’s Ambassador to China, His Excellency Robert Lee.

This significant initiative is being financed through a grant from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) as part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The project carries an estimated budget of FJD $300 million and stands as a pivotal element of the BRI in Fiji, aimed at enhancing infrastructure across the country.

During his visit, Rabuka emphasized the necessity of incorporating local perspectives into the project. He highlighted that this approach will not only improve connectivity but also create local job opportunities during the construction phase. Key areas inspected included 15 kilometers of the Nabouwalu Road (from Bua to Nasolo) and 35 kilometers of the road from Nabalebale to Dogoru on the Wailevu West Coast.

Fiji Roads Manager North, Delana Rabalaka, was also part of the delegation, providing insights on the technical and logistical details of the project. The visit concluded with a briefing from Provincial Administrator Savusavu, Jovesa Naqarikau, which highlighted the economic potential for the region stemming from enhanced road infrastructure.

Ambassador Lee expressed optimism about the project, recognizing its capacity to strengthen infrastructure and foster regional development. He noted that the upgraded roads are poised to invigorate crucial sectors like tourism and renewable energy initiatives, including hydropower, while simultaneously improving access for rural communities.

In summary, this initiative not only promises to enhance Fiji’s transport infrastructure but also hopes to stimulate economic growth and job creation in local communities, showcasing a commitment to inclusive development through international collaboration.
